Spring 2010
Dear Sir/Madam:
It is a great pleasure to announce the upcoming International Conference on Elderly People that will take place at the Assembly Hall in the Health Ministry on June, the 28th, this current year.
Increasing ageing of the population is a fact all over European countries, in parallel a better potential good health while ageing is another reality. These two facts open the needs for numerous labour, social and health policies concerns. Retirement age is under review, budget for social benefits are being increased and new social and health care need to be afforded. Concordantly, the European Charter of the rights and responsibilities of older people in need of long-term care is being finalized and the Intergroup on Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity has been re-established in the European Parliament to gather MEPs from different political groups who are interested in these topics.
Unfortunately, elderly are also victims of abuse and negligence and these phenomena have been studied by an EC funded project: ABUEL. The main aim of the Conference will be to spread the results from this Study. Due to its magnitude, this research project presents a landmark in relation to previous studies, for it may offer an innovative view on elderly populations in Europe, regarding on aspects as: quality of life, physical and psychical health and also about their care. Unfortunately, they are victims of abuse and negligence. At present, the Study is at the final steps of its completion.
The Project, in which the University of Granada has participated, has been coordinated by the Karolinska Institutet and funded by the European Agency of Health and Consumers from the European Commission (EC) and as part of the contract we signed with the EC, we are bound to organize an International Conference or Symposium. The research team, led by the scientific officer and project supervisor´s, has proposed Spain as the host country for the Conference to be organized. In my humble opinion, considering the interest showed by this project on Public Health, there is no better place for the Conference to take place than the Ministry of Health and Social Policies, in El Paseo del Prado (Madrid), whom we thank for its support and hospitality.
In addition to inform you, we take this opportunity to ask for your presence and participation in this one day Conference´s development, and to please invite you to distribute this information amongst your potentially interested colleagues.
You may find complementary information and a preview of the Conference´s program.
Best regards,
